  Elementary Science Methods 2: Week #10 What did you do in the lab today? This week in the lab, we began by completing a formative assessment on rocks. From this, we began reviewing our previous assignment, activitymania. We discussed with one another how we assess our student's learning and how we can step into a more equitable approach. We finished with creating our own sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks out of Starburst (see in photos below).  What was the big question? Is it a rock? What did you learn in Thursday's discussion? In Thursday's discussion we began our unit on plate tectonics.  Pressbook: What did you learn? I expanded my knowledge of the structure of the earth. Specifically, each layer of the earth's crust, mantle, inner and outer core. I learned about what each layer is made up of.  What was most helpful? Elementary Science Methods II: Week #9

  Elementary Science Methods 2: Week #9 What did you do in the lab today? In this week's lab, we studied how the 100 million-year-old coastline can affect how people vote. I found it interesting going into the upcoming election. Then we expanded our knowledge on making hypothesis of what events occurred on Earth at certain times. Lastly, we reviewed for the upcoming exam.  What was the big question? No question this week. What did you learn in Thursday's discussion? No discussion on Thursday due to exam. Elementary Science Methods 2: Week #8

   Elementary Science Methods 2: Week #8 What did you do in the lab today? In this week's lab, we presented our presentations on all kinds of different topics. These topics included the Origins of the Universe, Lifecycles of Stars and Galaxies, Origins of the Earth, Black Holes, and Exploration of Space: Past, Present, and Future. During these presentations, we took notes on these ideas to expand our knowledge.  What was the big question? The big question was: If it is the Winter solstice in Iowa, how much sunlight is on the South Pole? What did you learn in Thursday's discussion? In Thursday's discussion, we continued our discussion of each of the topics we presented in the lab on Monday. We discussed the article on misconceptions and how you should address them as a science educator. Elementary Science Methods ll: Week #7

  Elementary Science Methods 2: Week #7 What did you do in the lab today? In this week's lab, we continued studying the moon and stars. We began with a formative assessment to see how much we learned from last week. We discussed each of the questions and gained a better understanding of their meanings. Our activity was creating a solar system that would fit inside the Lindquist Center. I found this lab interesting because I was able to gain a sense of knowledge about how far each planet in the solar system really is from each other.  What was the big question? The big question was: Right now, today, I looked up at the sky, pondering life and all of it's mysteries. I was startled to see that we were currently in a "full moon" phase. Why was I so startled? What did you learn in Thursday's discussion? Elementary Science Methods ll: Week #6

  Elementary Science Methods 2: Week #6 What did you do in the lab today? This week in lab I learned about the solar system. Specifically, we studied the moon's phases, how it affect the amount of sunlight on the Earth, and how seasons work. I found it beneficial for my learning to see how I grew from the formative assessment to the application and hands-on activities in the lab. What was the big question? There were three questions we focused on: How do the phases of the moon work? What causes the seasons? What causes a lunar eclipse? What did you learn in Thursday's discussion? The discussion on Thursday was similar to the lab in that we dove into the formative assessment and studied the deeper meaning behind each big question. My biggest takeaway was thinking about where the sun and moon are at different times of the day.  Pressbook: What did you learn?
