  Elementary Science Methods 2: Week #14 What did you do in the lab today? On Monday, in the lab, we continued studying climate change and began by discussing our interview with an elder. Next, we studied the effects of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The activity we completed was the PhET Simulation, and you can see the conclusion we found below.  What was the big question? How does Greenhouse gas levels impact temperature? What will happen if we continue to increase CO2? What did you learn in Thursday's discussion? In Thursday's discussion, we studied more about greenhouse gases and carbon dioxide. We studied some graphs that show the increases in carbon since the beginning of the earth. Next, we studied the effects of albedo when it reflects off certain surfaces and emits heat.   Elementary Science Methods 2: Week #13 What did you do in the lab today? On Monday, in the lab, we continued studying climate change's effects in Iowa. We looked at the data from student achievement scores in different subjects in the State of Iowa. We studied the difference between weather and climate. Our activity during this lab was an investigation we read five different articles and shared with the class the most important factors we learned from the article. Many things we found from the articles included information that showed the effects of global warming on outdoor workers, livestock, and meat production in the state.  What was the big question? How do we know that the Goldfinch is in danger in Iowa? What did you learn in Thursday's discussion? In Thursday's discussion, we examined a graph from a source claiming that 'global warming is not an issue.'   Elementary Science Methods 2: Week #12 What did you do in the lab today? This week in the lab, we began studying climate change and its effects across the earth. We discussed what happened in the documentary Before the Flood, which  we watched for homework. Our activity was finding the average amount of rain in certain portions of Iowa. As you can see below, we found that out of the three cities studied, Fairfield, on average, received the most rainfall. I found this activity as well as the simulations to be extremely helpful in my learning! What was the big question? Can we "see" climate change happening? What did you learn in Thursday's discussion? Elementary Science Methods 2: Week #11

   Elementary Science Methods 2: Week #11 What did you do in the lab today? This week in the lab, we began by discussing our article from last week called Sweater Weather . This article was full of knowledgeable pedagogy information that explored how we can implement better teaching practices for our students. Our activity included testing different types of sand under a microscope to determine if they are wind, glacier, and water. I enjoyed and engaged well with this activity because it allowed me to gain knowledge of the different looks and textures of each type of sand.  What was the big question? What is water displacement? What did you learn in Thursday's discussion? This week in the lab, we focused on studying water displacement. We studied this by completing an activity where we studied if certain kinds of pop would float or sink in the water. This lab in class allowed me to connect my learning to the real world.   Elementary Science Methods 2: Week #10 What did you do in the lab today? This week in the lab, we began by completing a formative assessment on rocks. From this, we began reviewing our previous assignment, activitymania. We discussed with one another how we assess our student's learning and how we can step into a more equitable approach. We finished with creating our own sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks out of Starburst (see in photos below).  What was the big question? Is it a rock? What did you learn in Thursday's discussion? In Thursday's discussion we began our unit on plate tectonics.  Pressbook: What did you learn? I expanded my knowledge of the structure of the earth. Specifically, each layer of the earth's crust, mantle, inner and outer core. I learned about what each layer is made up of.  What was most helpful?   Elementary Science Methods 2: Week #9 What did you do in the lab today? In this week's lab, we studied how the 100 million-year-old coastline can affect how people vote. I found it interesting going into the upcoming election. Then we expanded our knowledge on making hypothesis of what events occurred on Earth at certain times. Lastly, we reviewed for the upcoming exam.  What was the big question? No question this week. What did you learn in Thursday's discussion? No discussion on Thursday due to exam. Elementary Science Methods 2: Week #8

   Elementary Science Methods 2: Week #8 What did you do in the lab today? In this week's lab, we presented our presentations on all kinds of different topics. These topics included the Origins of the Universe, Lifecycles of Stars and Galaxies, Origins of the Earth, Black Holes, and Exploration of Space: Past, Present, and Future. During these presentations, we took notes on these ideas to expand our knowledge.  What was the big question? The big question was: If it is the Winter solstice in Iowa, how much sunlight is on the South Pole? What did you learn in Thursday's discussion? In Thursday's discussion, we continued our discussion of each of the topics we presented in the lab on Monday. We discussed the article on misconceptions and how you should address them as a science educator.
